Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa allows non-EU/EEA nationals to live and work remotely from Spain for foreign companies or international clients.
Who qualifies for the Digital Nomad Visa?
- Employed: working remotely in Spain for a foreign company (a job contract is required).
- Freelancer (self-employed): working remotely in Spain for clients abroad (client contracts are required).
Key requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa
- Employment status: Must work remotely for non-Spanish companies or have international clients, with a maximum of 20% of income coming from Spanish sources. Must show at least 3 months of prior employment or active client contracts.
- Qualifications: Need a university degree, or at least 3 years of professional work experience.
- Financial threshold: Main applicant €35,000/year, plus extra for dependents.
- Documentation: Valid passport, clean criminal background check, and comprehensive private health insurance valid in Spain.
Visa duration & renewal
- Application route:
- Apply in your home country through a local Spanish consulate (yielding a 1-year visa).
- or directly from within Spain through us (yielding a 3-year residence permit).
In both cases, the fees charged by the Spanish consulate or by us are similar, but you only get a maximum of 1 year through the consulate whereas we get you 3.
Also, Spanish consulates do not handhold you, explain the required documents in detail, and have a long turnaround (months). Whereas at LNA we assign you a visa manager to assist you from start to finish, delivering a proactive service.
- Total length: Renewable up to a total of 6 years, after which you can apply for permanent residency.
Digital Nomad Visa benefits
There are a bunch of reasons why foreigners choose to go down the route of the Digital Nomad Visa.
- Fast-tracked. Nomad visas are granted in under 3 weeks (if applied by us in Spain, consulates abroad take several months).
- Special tax rate. Qualifying digital nomads may apply for the Beckham Law tax regime, paying a flat 24% income tax rate on income up to €600,000 instead of progressive rates.
- All assets located abroad go untaxed by Spain.
- Long duration. Clear rules, initially for 3 years, then works on a 3-year renewal, totalling 6 years. This visa has one of the longest durations available.
- All the family is included. Your partner, your children (up to 25 years old), and even your parents may be included as dependants.
- Allows you to legally override the 90/180-dayrule that limits stay in Spain (and by extension in the Schengen Area/EU/EEA).
- Tax breaks for the foreign employer (if it has an establishment in Spain)
- You are not required to file a 720 tax return (unlike Spanish tax residents)
- You are not required to file Wealth Tax (unlike Spanish tax residents)
- You can request to defer tax payments on the first and second year, without attracting penalties or delay interests being rolled on top (as is standard practice)
- For the purposes of other tax agencies, you will be tax resident in Spain.
- Path to permanent residency. The time spent leads to permanent residency – optional.
- Path to Spanish citizenship. The time spent leads to Spanish nationality after 10 years of continued and legal residency – optional.
Conclusion
A Digital Nomad Visa is hands down the best visa money can buy.
The government literally rolls out the red rug for you.
Fron an administrative point of view you are regarded as resident in Spain, but from a taxation point of view a legal fiction operates whereby you are dispensed the status of a non-resident taxpayer (which opens up a slew of tax benefits collated above) - no other visa in Spain offers tax breaks.
At LNA, we offer clients a non-nonsense approach delivering results. We have successfully attained hundreds of nomad visas since 2023.
On instructing us, we assign you a visa manager that handholds you throughout the whole procedure, from start to finish, answering in a timely manner all your queries.
